Coastal Aquifer Salinization in Semi-Arid Regions: The Case of Grombalia (Tunisia)

چکیده
Groundwater resources are facing increasing pressure especially in semi-arid regions where they often represent the main freshwater resource to sustain human needs. Several aquifers Mediterranean basin suffer from salinization and quality degradation. This study provides an assessment of Grombalia coastal aquifer (Tunisia) based on multidisciplinary approach that combines chemical isotopic (?2H, ?18O, 3H, 14C ?13C) methods characterize relation between groundwater variation recharge. The results indicate total dissolved solids exceed 1000 mg/L most samples excepting recharge area. In addition water–rock interaction, evaporation nitrate pollution contributing mineralization, reverse cation exchange process constitute important mechanism controlling mineralization with enhancing risk saltwater intrusion. Environmental isotope tracers reveal is evolving within open system close system. A significant component recent water recharging confirmed by applying correction models ?13C values activities tritium contents. However, this recharge, which mainly associated return flow irrigation water, contributes salinization, for shallow aquifer.

An economic model of waterlogging and salinization in arid regions
Waterlogging and salinization arise in arid areas largely because two essential resources, irrigation water and the assimilative capacity of unconfined aquifers, are not priced or allocated correctly to reflect scarcity values and opportunity costs. Farm-level and project-level models of crop production are examined to identify policies that will encourage farmers to consider opportunity costs ...
متن کاملThe Landscape as a Unit for Rangeland Inventory in Arid and Semi-arid Regions of Iran
Severe range degradation was critically extended in many region of Iran and caused many rangelands were restricted and interwoven with croplands in a complex system. Therefore, rangeland planning and inventory as an isolated activity has become almost impossible. Current landscape planning involves contributions of different social organizations often with different interests and with different...
متن کاملInvestigating the interaction between rivers and sand dunes in arid and semi-arid regions of Iran
Extended abstract 1- Introduction Fluvial and aeolian processes are important factors in changing the surface of morphology in the Earth. When rivers and sand dunes meet, the transportation of sediment between them can lead to one of the systems or both of them change. With their connection between river sediment and wind systems there would be lots of reactions, but very little has been st...

The geochemical characteristics of a near shore inland aquifer system have been investigated in the Coastal Aquifer Test Field (CAT-Field) between Bremerhaven and Cuxhaven in the Northern Part of Germany which is described by Kessels et al.(this issue). Groundwater and sediment samples from the aquifer were taken at different locations on the flank of a glacial channel at depths between 5 and 1...
